Game of Thrones finished on HBO after eight seasons of the wildly-popular fantasy series. Drawing to a close earlier this year, the show revealed who sits on the Iron Throne as the story veered from George RR Martin’s source material. In a new interview, Theon Greyjoy actor Alfie Allen has revealed how he felt when fans criticised the much-anticipated ending.
When it came to ending the long-running fantasy series Game of Thrones, there was a lot of expectation on the shoulders of David Benioff and DB Weiss.
The final episodes of season eight aired in May of this year to mixed responses.
At the time, many criticised plot holes in the scripts and a viewer petition to remake the final series reached 1.7 million signatures.
However, the show has also been the subject of praise, receiving 32 nominations in the 2019 Emmys.
This includes a nod for best-supporting actor Alfie Allen who played Theon Greyjoy since the show started in 2011.
The actor – who’s Lily Allen’s younger brother – has now weighed in on what he thought about the criticism in a new interview with Deadline.
He told the publication: “David and Dan were under huge pressure to finish this series off and do it in the right way.
“In my opinion, HBO set out to have a fantasy show — in inverted commas — that was steeped in familiar relationships, and those things were always at the core of it.
“I think that’s what those last few episodes were. It rounded up all those relationships, and of course, people will be unhappy to leave them.”
In response to some fan’s intense reaction to people involved in the show, Allen spoke about how disrespectful it was.
He added: “What p***** me off, though, is when you see people like the camera operators, who are the best in the world, people behind the scenes who break their backs for this show, who are then getting trolled online by people.
“I can’t even delve into that world too much, for my own sanity. But to read all that stuff… People laying into the DPs. It blows my mind.”
Allen is not the only actor who has spoken out in response to the fan petition with many of the other stars previously discussing it.
Fans will remember that Theon was killed in the final season protecting Bran Stark (played by Isaac Hempstead Wright) from the Night King (Vladimir Furdik).
Speaking of the moment, he told Deadline: “I’m happy, too, that the fans got to say goodbye to the character with an ending that had a bit of honour and redemption.
“I think his arc deserved that. And I thank David and Dan for giving me the tools to be able to do that.
“I’m forever grateful to them, even though they f***** with my head a bit along the way.”
