Andrew Weatherall dead: DJ and Primal Scream producer, 56, dies after pulmonary embolism | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

DJ Andrew Weatherall died in the early hours of today after a “blood clot reached his heart”. The 56-year-old’s management team described his death as “swift” as they confirmed the tragic news.

A statement read: “”We are deeply sorry to announce that Andrew Weatherall, the noted DJ and musician passed away in the early hours of this morning, Monday 17th February 2020, at Whipps Cross Hospital, London.

“The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism. He was being treated in hospital but unfortunately, the blood clot reached his heart.

“His death was swift and peaceful.”

The post went on: “His family and friends are profoundly saddened by his death and are taking time to gather their thoughts.

“Further announcements regarding funeral arrangements will be made in due course by Andrew’s press officer, James Parrish.”

Andrew’s DJ career started when he teamed up with Paul Oakenfold on the club remix of Hallelujah for the Happy Mondays.

Other similar projects followed, including New Order’s World In Motion and Loaded, based on Primal Scream’s I’m Losing More Than I’ll Ever Have.

His remix of My Bloody Valentine’s Soon was ranked number one in NME’s list of The 50 Best Remixes Ever.

After starting group Boy’s Own, he went on to form The Sabres of Paradise before working with Keith Tenniswood in Two Lone Swordsmen.

During his career, he worked as a producer with some of the industry’s biggest names including Primal Scream and One Dove.

Back in 2006, he released his debut solo EP, The Bullet Catcher’s Apprentice, and three years later his debut solo album A Pox on the Pioneers came out.

His music has formed the backdrop to numerous advertisements, such as Volkswagen Tiguan in 2007 and Ford Fiesta in 2009.

Social media has been flooded with tributes, with DJ Dave Haslam tweeting: “I can’t believe I am writing this.

“#RIP Andrew Weatherall (6 April 1963 – 17 February 2020. One of the greatest, sweetest, funniest guys I’ve ever met.”

Darren Emerson of Underworld said: “Gutted… Devastated… Shocked. A legend. A true gent. Pioneer.

“Believed in me as a young DJ and got me to cover for him at the legendary Boys Own Weekender. You’ll be missed mate. RIP Andrew Weatherall.”
