Archie Comics series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been cancelled by American streaming platform Netflix.
Speaking about the decision, showrunner Roberto Aguirre Sacasa said: “Working on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has been an incredible honor from Day One.
“The cast, beginning with Kiernan as everyone’s favorite teen witch, has been an absolute joy.
“I am beyond thankful to the crew, writers, editors, assistants, and everyone for pouring so much love into this dark dream of a show.”
The executive, who is also the showrunner on sister Archie Comics series Riverdale, continued: “I’m also grateful to our partners at Netflix, Warner Bros., Berlanti Television and Archie Comics for letting us tell the story we wanted to tell, the way we wanted to tell it.”
He added to Deadline: “We can’t wait for everyone to see Part Four.”
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will be concluding with its final outing, known as Part Four.
Sadly, the cancellation comes not long after fellow Riverdale spin-off series Kate Keene was axed by The CW after one season.
The news of this cancellation comes after Netflix’s popular series Ozark was also revealed to be ending with season four – albeit a super-sized one split into two parts with 14 episodes rather than just the regular 14 instalments.
For now, it’s not clear whether any of the characters from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina could move into Riverdale given they exist within the same universe.
In the world of Archie Comics, there are neighbouring towns with Riverdale mentioned in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
There were even plans previously for the teenage witch to turn up in Riverdale but these plans were later shelved.
Previously addressing a crossover, CEO of Archie Comics and Riverdale executive producer Andy Goldwater told TV Line in 2018: “Right now, we’re not thinking about that…They’re two separate entities for now.”
Even Aguirre-Sacasa seemed to rule it out at the time, saying: “Right now we’re just making sure that the shows have their own identities and own set of rules.”
However, with the cancellation of Sabrina, perhaps this could all change.
Netflix picked up Chilling Adventures of Sabrina in 2018 after The CW decided not to commission it.
The show proved to be a hit on Netflix and quickly got the green light for more with a Christmas special and a recommission from fans.
Falling into a darker vein than its Nineties predecessor, even former Sabrina Spellman actress Melissa Joan Hart hailed the series.
Season four of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will comprise of eight episodes which will see The Eldritch Terrors arriving in Greendale after previously being teased.
The Eldritch Terrors will be the biggest threat the coven has ever faced but Sabrina Spellman (played by Kiernan Shipka) will be taking them on.
Returning one last time for the fourth outing will be Miranda Otto as Aunt Zelda, Richard Coyle as Father Blackwood, Ross Lynch as Harvey Kinkle and Lucy Davis as Aunt Hilda.
Further cast members include Chance Perdomo as Ambrose Spellman, Michelle Gomez as Mrs Wardwell/Madam Satan, Jaz Sinclair as Rosalind “Roz” Walker, Lachlan Watson as Theo Putnan, Gavin Leatherwood as Nick Scratch, Tati Gabrielle as Prudence Blackwood, Adeline Rudolph as Agatha and Abigail Cowen as Dorcas.
